Step 6 in creating your Life Plan is where all the magic happens, but it is the step most people skip: doing the actual work, working the plan to make your dreams come true! For a long list of reasons, many people will do all of the preparatory work, creating a life plan in great detail, yet they will not follow through and do the actual work required to make the plan work. Show Outline:

  1. Life Plans are like gym memberships. Many people will join the gym, pay the deposit, pay the monthly dues, but never actually go to the gym to use the equipment to get in better shape.
  2. There are many reasons people do not follow through and take the actions necessary to create the life of their dreams.
  3. The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, is a MUST READ book that deals with this very issue.
    1. It is a book about a boy who discovers his “personal legend” and sets off to achieve it. Along the way, he has doubts, hardships, victories, comes to a great place and almost stops there, etc.
  4. Quotes from The Alchemist:
    1. …everyone believes the world’s greatest lie. It’s this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That’s the world’s greatest lie.
    2. It’s what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young knows what their destiny is. At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible. They are not afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives. But, as time passes, a mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realize their destiny.
    3. When you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it
      1. The problem is that most people want safety, comfort and to not be afraid, to just keep things as they are–and that’s usually what they get…
      2. Your fear of regret must be greater than your fear of failure in order to achieve your dreams.
    4. …before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons we’ve learned as we’ve moved toward that dream. That’s the point at which most people give up. It’s the point at which, as we say in the language of the desert, one ‘dies of thirst just when the palm trees have appeared on the horizon.’
    5. …you’re different from me, because you want to realize your dreams. I just want to dream… I’m afraid it will all be a disappointment, so I prefer to just dream about it.
      1. Do you want to realize your dreams, or do you simply want to dream about your dreams?
    6. Well, what if I decide to stay? …Let me tell you what will happen. You’ll be the counselor of the oasis …You’ll marry Fatima, and you’ll both be happy for a year…. And you’ll get better and better at understanding omens, because the desert is the best teacher there is…. Sometime during the second year, you’ll remember about the treasure. The omens will begin insistently to speak of it, and you’ll try to ignore them…During the third year, the omens will continue to speak of your treasure and your destiny. You’ll walk around, night after night, at the oasis, and Fatima will be unhappy because she’ll feel it was she who interrupted your quest. But you will love her, and she’ll return your love… So you won’t blame her. But many times you’ll walk the sands of the desert, thinking that maybe you could have left… that you could have trusted more in your love for Fatima. Because what kept your at the oasis was your own fear that you might never come back. At that point, the omens will tell you that your treasure is buried forever…. Then, sometime during the fourth year, the omens will abandon you, because you’ve stopped listening to them. The tribal chieftains will see that, and you’ll be dismissed from your position as counselor… You’ll spend the rest of your days knowing that you didn’t pursue your destiny, and that now it’s too late.
  5. Life Plan Step 6: Work the Plan
    1. Develop a morning routine as described in LIAM 3
    2. Start each day with gratitude–be thankful for being alive and for who you are and for what you have RIGHT NOW!
    3. Keep your dream, your goals, and what you need to do to improve by 1 point constantly in front of you
    4. Each morning: read your affirmations of your dreams to remind you of what you want your life to be and why
    5. Each morning: Review the purpose statement for each spoke in the wheel of life, and what your 10 looks like. Read your affirmations – the I AM statements: “I am so happy and grateful I am earning xxx per month as a direct result of loving, serving, and adding value to people’s lives!”
    6. Each morning: Review what you need to do to move 1 step higher.
      1. Make a plan and take action on these steps–today I will…
    7. At the end of each day, record your victories–never record or dwell on your failures–a victory can be found in learning you don’t want to do whatever caused you to fail again–next time I will do something different than… (but keep it positive!)
    8. Weekly: look through your gratitude log and your victory log — give thanks for any progress! Revise/Add action items
    9. Monthly: do the same thing–always focusing on gratitude and victories
    10. If at any point, you have achieved the next level for that area, record it, celebrate it, go through Step 5 again to discover what the next step looks like.
    11. Quarterly: honest evaluation of progress, revising, adding, changing
    12. Yearly: Go through the entire process all over again – Steps 1 – 5. Our dreams can change as we move through life. Always be updating your plan. Your plan is alive! It has a life of its own that you give it.
